Welcome to the website of Banchory Devenick &
Maryculter Cookney
United Parish Kirks.
In these
pages we hope to give you an insight into our parish kirks and their fascinating histories.
The serving minister of these parish kirks is
Rev Dr Bruce K Gardner
The
kirk and it's graveyards of Banchory-Devenick ( banchory or bancor 'the
Ministries of' Devenick) are situated just off the Lower Deeside road
approximately 2 miles from the Bridge of Dee
(map here). As far as we know the original kirk was built in the twelfth century on the legendary site of St Devenick's tomb,
(Saint Devenick who was an evangelist, sent out to minister to
the Picts and who died in Caithnes) and it was repaired in 1620's on the orders of Bishop
Forbes and rebuilt in 1822 which is the kirk building that stands on this site today.
Maryculter kirk
and it's graveyards are situated in the village of Kirkton of Maryculter, which
is approximately 6 miles from the Bridge of Dee on the Lower Deeside road (map here). Built
in 1787, the traditional rectangular shape was extended in 1882 to the
cruciform shape
that we see today, which is a
feature of many mediaeval churches. The new extension to the hall will further emphasise
the base of the cross, adding, to the old, new facilities which extend the
traditional ministry into the twenty-first century.
